Real Estate Professionals: Five Tips for Creating the Perfect For Sale Sign

The sign you hang in front of a home you are trying to sell draws attention to that particular home, but in most cases, as these signs are used repeatedly for multiple properties, they are also an investment into your real estate career. If you are a real estate agent trying to choose the best "for sale" sign for your business, here are five tips to consider:

1. Add your calling card to your for sale sign

All for sale signs have the number of the real estate company handling the sale, but if you are trying to build up your business and your brand, you should include your personal photo, name and cell number on your sign.

When prospective buyers or sellers see your name, they should immediately associate it with the type and quality of homes you sell. In addition to representing the company with which you are affiliated, you are your own brand, and everything from your sign to how you look in your photo, to the type of sign holder you purchase, is part of this brand building process.

2. Create a stately look with post signs

For sale signs typically come with one of two different types of frames or sign holders. If you want to save money, you can use  generic metal frame sign holders, sometimes called banjo frames. However, if you want to create a stately and elegant look, opt for a post sign instead.

Made of wood or sturdy PVC, post signs feature a newel post with a decorative finial on its top. Extending perpendicular from the top of the newel post is a matching arm. Your for sale sign hangs from this arm.

Although these posts are more expensive than their metal counterparts, they are worth the investment in most cases. They draw attention to the property you are trying to sell, and they can easily be fitted with extra bins for brochures and business cards.

3. Invest in add-ons and extra signs

Whether you opt for a metal frame or a post sign, you should have a spot where you can offer brochures full of photos of the inside of the property as well as your business card. However, these aren't the only extras that you need.

Your real estate sign needs to be alterable so you can update passersby on what's happening with the property. Ideally, your post should have a slot in the top where you can post small signs with updates. You should also be able to hang small signs under your main sign or stick "sold" signs right on top of your main sign with magnets or reusable adhesive.

Some of the extra signs in which you should invest should include the following phrases: "open house", "price reduced" and "offer pending".

4. Opt for waterproof business sign materials

Whether you are buying your main for sale sign or one of your extra signs, you need it to be durable and long lasting. You want a material like polyethylene or PVC that is easy and lightweight to transport but that is still strong enough to survive rain, wind and the sun's harsh rays without weathering or fading.

If the quality of your sign is poor or worn out, it doesn't reflect positively on your brand, and it may hamper the sale of that property.

5. Make your sign more visible

Obviously, visibility is a key issue to consider with any business sign, but it is especially important to consider when you are trying to get people to stop and take a look at your property. To make your sign visible, use bright colors, simple fonts and large sizes.

During open houses, hang balloons on your sign to draw attention to it, and consider using reflective lettering to make your sign more visible in the evening.
